SCENE 01 / HELICOPTER FILMING

Helicopter Filming

Large-scale aerial cinematography with gyro-stabilized camera systems across Iceland.

Scroll

Here is how this works in practice. Helicopter filming delivers dramatic aerial perspectives with the payload capacity, flight endurance, and altitude range that drones cannot match. In Iceland, helicopters equipped with gyro-stabilized mounts capture sweeping vistas over Vatnajökull glacier, Landmannalaugar highlands, Þingvellir National Park, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Reynisfjara black sand beach, and active volcanic systems across the Icelandic interior.

Here is the short of it. We set up helicopter filming with ICETRA-certified aviation operators and skilled aerial cinematographers across Iceland. Our team handles Icelandic Transport Authority sign-off, national park approvals, site-level agency permits for fragile landscapes, and safety planning — so your production captures breathtaking footage over the Ring Road, glacier lagoons, and volcanic craters while meeting the highest aviation standards.

On Location

Our helicopter filming crews capture large-scale aerials over Iceland — Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, the volcanic Highlands and active eruption sites — with stabilised gyro-mounts and experienced aerial coordinators.

Here is how this works in practice. We deliver helicopter filming as a fully set up aerial operation, pairing camera ships and pilots with gyro-stabilised mounts such as Shotover and Cineflex systems and an aerial director of photography. Helicopter stays the right tool where a drone cannot go — long, high, fast aerials over a glacier the size of Vatnajökull, or access to remote Highland and eruption locations that ground crews cannot reach. Our aerial coordinators plan flight paths, safety, fuel and crew positioning, and brief the production realistically on Iceland's defining variable: weather.

Here is the short of it. Fast-changing subarctic conditions, wind and low cloud over high terrain mean aerial days are planned with backup windows. Cold affects the camera payload and we plan for it. We set up with air guidance services. The Icelandic Transport Authority for the airspace each flight uses. We integrate the aerial unit with the wider production so coverage cuts cleanly with ground footage. We staff from the skilled Reykjavík crew base and bring in extra aerial systems and pros from the UK and mainland Europe under ATA carnet for larger shoots.

Here is the breakdown. Iceland is one of the world's great aerial filming countries. A subarctic island on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, it gives Vatnajökull and its surrounding UNESCO-listed national park, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, waterfalls, the volcanic Highlands at Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk, and active eruption zones such as Fagradalsfjall and Reykjanes — landscapes that helicopters can reveal at a scale nothing else matches. Productions from 'Game of Thrones' to Nolan's 'Interstellar' used the country for exactly these vistas. Helicopters also give practical access to the Highlands and glaciers that 4x4 super-jeeps reach only in summer.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Aerial filming over national parks and covered areas is set up with the Environment Agency of the country, with attention to minimising disturbance of a fragile environment and its wildlife. Eligible aerial-crew and gear spend can count toward the country's production reimbursement of 25 per cent, rising to 35 per cent for qualifying projects, administered by Film in the country.

FAQ

Aerial Cinematography Expertise

When should I choose helicopter over drone filming?

Here is the breakdown. Helicopters are ideal for extended aerial takes over glaciers, high-speed sequences, shots needing heavy cinema cameras, long-range highland and volcanic coverage, and situations where drones cannot operate due to ICETRA rules, high winds, or national park restrictions. For quick setups and lower altitudes, drones may be more cost-effective.

What camera systems do you use for helicopter filming?

We operate gyro-stabilized systems including Cineflex and Shotover mounts. This can carry ARRI, RED, and other cinema cameras. These systems give rock-steady footage even during dynamic flight maneuvers and allow remote camera control.

Can you film over Reykjavik or national parks?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Yes, with proper sign-off. Reykjavik and Keflavík have controlled airspace rules, and national parks like Vatnajökull and Þingvellir need park authority approval. But we can obtain helicopter filming permits with advance planning. We set up with ICETRA and the Environment Agency to secure needed approvals.

What types of helicopters do you use?

Here is how the picture comes together. We work with many helicopter types based on your needs—from smaller aircraft for tight glacier maneuvers to larger helicopters for heavy camera systems and extended flights across remote Icelandic terrain. Aircraft selection depends on weather skill, shot needs, and payload needs.

How do you handle air-to-ground coordination?

We use pro radio comms kit for real-time planning between helicopter crew and ground teams. Directors can communicate with pilots and camera operators. We give video downlink for live tracking of aerial shots.

How far in advance should we book helicopter filming?

Here is what we have to work with. We recommend 4-6 weeks minimum for helicopter operations in Iceland to allow time for ICETRA sign-off, national park permits, and weather backup planning. Shoots in covered areas or during summer peak season may need longer lead times.

Productions in Iceland that need this often pair it with Aerial Drone Services, Car Filming, and Vehicle Mounting for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Camera & Cinematography and Drone Videography.
