LED Lighting Systems

Here is how this works in practice. We give today's LED lighting systems with crews who know why the technology suits Iceland in specific. LED draws far less power than classic units. This matters on remote locations where lighting often runs from batteries or compact power packs rather than mains — a glacier edge or a Highland valley has no grid. Our packages span tunable bi-colour and full-RGBW panels, soft sources, point-source LEDs and pixel-mappable tubes, all controllable for colour and effect, letting our gaffers match or shape the country's distinctive natural light.

Here is the short of it. The cold-weather case for LED is practical too: low heat output, robust performance in damp conditions, and battery sets we keep warmed for trusted starts in sub-zero air. We plan secure rigging because Icelandic wind is unforgiving on lightweight fixtures. We run weather protection on each location position. We staff from the skilled Reykjavík crew base — including teams used to stage work at the RVK Studios tricky in Gufunes — and bring extra LED inventory from the UK and mainland Europe for larger shoots.

Here is the breakdown. Iceland is a natural fit for energy-efficient LED lighting. The country runs on close to 100 per cent renewable electricity from geothermal and hydroelectric power, so mains-fed LED rigs are both practical and genuinely low-impact where infrastructure reaches. Off-grid, the efficiency of LED is what makes battery-powered lighting viable across the Highlands, easy to reach only in summer via F-roads, and at remote glacier and coastal locations.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. The subarctic light a LED rig is balanced against shifts a lot through the year — the long Midnight Sun of June, the brief low light of midwinter, the aurora — and tunable LED gives a gaffer the control to work with all of it. Filming in covered areas such as Þingvellir National Park is set up with the Environment Agency of the country. Our crews keep fixtures and cable routes off fragile moss and lava.

Eligible lighting and gear spend can count toward the country's production reimbursement of 25 per cent, rising to 35 per cent for qualifying projects, administered by Film in the country.
