SCENE 01 / GAFFER LIGHTING TEAM
Gaffer & Lighting Services Iceland
Professional gaffers and lighting crews with expertise in LED, HMI, and tungsten systems. From intimate interviews to large-scale nighttime shoots across Iceland.
Here is how this works in practice. The gaffer and lighting team translate the Director of Photography's vision into practical lighting setups on set. In Iceland, gaffers face unique challenges including extreme seasonal light variations — midnight sun in summer and near-total darkness in winter — needing top adaptability at locations from Reykjavik studios to glacier base camps.
Here is the short of it. We assemble skilled gaffer and lighting teams matched to your production's scale, style, and tech needs. With gear sourced through Icelandic rental houses like Pegasus Pictures and Truenorth, our team sets up crew availability, gear sourcing, and department logistics so your lighting team arrives fully prepared for Iceland's conditions.

On Location
Our gaffers and lighting teams shape the look of productions across Iceland, from RVK Studios stages in Reykjavík to remote glacier and Highland locations where the daylight itself is the lead source.
Here is how this works in practice. We supply gaffers and full lighting crews who plan around Iceland's defining light condition: a daily window that swings from the steady Midnight Sun of June to barely four hours of low sun in midwinter. Our gaffers work closely with the DP to schedule scenes to the ready light and to design supplementary lighting that extends or shapes it.
Here is the short of it. On location that means rugged, weather-resistant kit. LED panels and HMI units rated for cold and damp, secure rigging that holds in Highland wind, and ND and diffusion running for snowfield and glacier glare. Cold is a working factor across: we run warmed batteries and power packs rated for sub-zero starts, plan cable runs that survive frost and spray, and rotate crew on exposed plateaus.
Here is the breakdown. We staff from the skilled Reykjavík crew base — including teams familiar with stage work at the RVK Studios tricky in Gufunes — and supplement electricians and rigging gaffers from the UK and mainland Europe when a production needs scale. From a single best boy and a panel kit to a full feature-size lighting department, we match the team to the shoot.
Here is what that looks like on the ground. Iceland's environment shapes each lighting decision. The country runs on close to 100 per cent renewable electricity from geothermal and hydroelectric power. This makes mains-fed lighting both practical and low-impact where infrastructure reaches. Off-grid Highland and glacier locations rely on power packs and battery systems instead. The subarctic light is the constant variable — long, raking and soft in summer, brief and low in winter, with the aurora as a winter feature — and a skilled gaffer treats natural light as the primary source to be balanced against.
Here is how the picture comes together. Filming in covered areas such as Þingvellir National Park or the Vatnajökull National Park is set up with the Environment Agency of the country. Our lighting crews plan rigging and cable routes that keep gear off fragile moss and lava where recovery takes decades. Eligible lighting-crew and gear spend can attract the country's production reimbursement of 25 per cent, rising to 35 per cent for qualifying larger projects, administered by Film in the country. This we factor into how a lighting package is scoped.
FAQ
Our Lighting Network
What does a gaffer do on set?
Here is the breakdown. The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, set up gear, and make sure safe power distribution across the production.
What crew positions are in a lighting department?
A full lighting department has: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and gear), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger shoots, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.
Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?
Crew and gear are mostly separate. We can set up gear packages from Icelandic rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal gear for smaller shoots.
How many electricians do I need for my production?
Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium shoots mostly need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians, while larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.
Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?
Yes. Our gaffers are skilled working with global cinematographers and know global terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are fluent English Icelandic-English.
Do you provide generators and power distribution?
We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our rental partners. Power packs operators can be had in crew packages for shoots needing major power infrastructure.
