Here is how this works in practice. A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. Iceland's otherworldly landscapes — volcanic terrain, glaciers, black sand beaches, and the midnight sun — present unique cinematographic challenges and rewards that have drawn shoots from Interstellar to Game of Thrones, with local DPs pro in managing the island's extreme and fast changing light conditions.

Here is the short of it. We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who know both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting in Reykjavík or on location at Vatnajökull glacier, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility, supported by the Icelandic Film Centre's 25% reimbursement scheme and local rental infrastructure through Pegasus.

On Location

Our Directors of Photography work the extremes of Icelandic light, from the near-24-hour Midnight Sun over Vatnajökull to the four-hour midwinter window when the aurora rises above Þingvellir.

Here is how this works in practice. We place Directors of Photography who can pre-light a production around Iceland's defining variable: light that swings from steady June daylight to a brief, low midwinter window. Our DPs build shooting schedules around the golden hours that, in summer, stretch for most of the night, and they plan glacier and Highlands days with weather spares because a clear shot at Jökulsárlón can close within the hour.

Here is the short of it. On set, the DP leads the camera department through cold-weather realities — condensation when gear moves between heated cars and sub-zero air, battery drain in wind chill, and ND running for snowfield glare. We pair each DP with assistants familiar with ARRI Alexa, RED and Sony Venice bodies, and set up rental support from the Reykjavík crew base.

Here is the breakdown. For larger shoots we supplement the camera team with operators and trainees from the UK and mainland Europe, all working to the lighting plan the DP sets during the tech scout, so the look holds whether you are on a the capital stage at RVK Studios in Gufunes or on a remote black-sand beach.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Iceland gives a DP a palette found almost nowhere else: a subarctic island on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where lava fields, glaciers and geothermal steam sit within a single drive. Productions from Nolan's 'Interstellar' at Svínafellsjökull to 'Game of Thrones' beyond-the-Wall sequences around Mývatn chose the country for exactly this. The light itself is the draw and the discipline — the long, raking sun of summer and the soft blue midwinter hours each demand a different lighting way, and a skilled DP plans the day to match.

Here is how the picture comes together. Eligible spend on camera crew and rental can attract the country's production reimbursement, administered by Film in the country, of 25 per cent rising to 35 per cent for qualifying larger projects. This directly affects how a DP scopes gear budgets. Filming in covered areas such as Þingvellir National Park or the Vatnajökull National Park is set up with the Environment Agency of the country. Our DPs plan camera positions that respect the 'leave no trace' principle on terrain where moss and lava recover only over decades.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

Here is the breakdown. We give DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and global broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project needs.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production needs and rental availability.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We set up gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-given gear.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Iceland?

Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Iceland, handling work permits and logistics. We also give Icelandic DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours are extra based on project scope.

Productions in Iceland that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Drone Videography, and Underwater Camera Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Production Services.
