Color Grading

Here is how this works in practice. Our team sets up grading for shoots filmed in Iceland by matching the finishing route to the project's distribution plan. We manage media preparation, reference material and scheduling, working from a creative brief agreed with the director and cinematographer. Reykjavik grading suites equipped with DaVinci Resolve and calibrated displays can carry edit, broadcast and streaming projects through a full creative grade, and we set up remote sessions so filmmakers can review and direct from anywhere over a colour-accurate link.

Here is the short of it. For theatrical features and top series, where a large global shoot mostly finishes the heavy grade and HDR mastering at a set up overseas site, we set up the handover: we lock the colour space, deliver conform-ready media, brief the senior colourist on the intended look and watch trim passes for SDR alongside the HDR master.

Here is the breakdown. Across, we keep a single record of looks and revisions so the grade stays steady whether it is completed in the capital or abroad, and we run a final QC pass on the returned masters before delivery.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Iceland's landscape almost dictates a bold way to grading. The island gives extremes of colour and contrast in a single shoot: the near-monochrome black sand of Reynisfjara, the saturated blue of glacial ice at Jokulsarlon, the rust and ochre of geothermal ground at Myvatn, the green moss of the lava fields. Productions including 'Interstellar', 'Batman Begins', 'Rogue One' and 'Game of Thrones' built distinctive looks from this raw material, and the grade is where a director decides whether to heighten or restrain it.

The 25 percent reimbursement administered by Film in the country, rising to 35 percent for larger shoots and qualifying series, rewards spend inside the country, so most large shoots concentrate their Icelandic budget on shooting while reserving the theatrical grade for an overseas suite.
