Film production in Iceland

Why Film in Iceland?

Iceland offers an extraordinary variety of filming locations — from glaciers and volcanoes to black sand beaches, geothermal hot springs, and dramatic fjords. Iconic locations include Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik, Reynisfjara beach, and Thingvellir National Park, among the most sought-after filming sites in the world.

A rich mix of geology, culture, and infrastructure makes Iceland one of the industry's most versatile destinations. Strong incentives and advanced facilities support productions of every scale.

Otherworldly Landscapes

Glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields, and geothermal areas have doubled for alien planets in Interstellar, Prometheus, and Rogue One.

Coastal Drama

Black sand beaches, towering sea stacks, fjords, and the North Atlantic coastline provide powerful seascapes and waterfronts.

Charming Towns

Reykjavik, Akureyri, Vik, Husavik, and Selfoss offer Nordic architecture, colourful streetscapes, and compact urban settings.

Diverse Terrain

Highlands, ice caves, waterfalls, moss-covered lava fields, and geothermal valleys deliver multiple looks within easy driving distance.

Incentives and Rebates for Filmmakers

Iceland delivers exceptional value as your filming destination through established locations, experienced crews, and comprehensive financial incentives. Government-backed rebate programs reduce operational costs across feature films, television, and commercial content.

You gain immediate budget relief through structured rebate systems for domestic and international productions, keeping creative vision intact while optimising spend.

Rebate for International Productions

The Tax Rebate for International Productions (film incentive) The delivers up to 30% rebate on qualifying expenditure for projects meeting the $1 million minimum spend. It covers crew compensation, equipment procurement, and operational costs for features, series, and animation.

Eligibility and Application Process

Minimum 5-day shoot in Iceland with $1 million+ eligible spend. Expect a 2-3 month processing timeline requiring detailed budgets, schedules, and crew documentation. Partnering with experienced Icelandic production services keeps submissions compliant and on schedule.

Additional Regional Incentives

We combine national film incentive rebates with targeted regional programs, including river region's 20% eligible expense rebate and Strasbourg's 15% municipal incentive. Strategic planning aligns locations with financial objectives for maximum budget impact.
